There's an abandoned golf course close to my home that I explore. It's like a macro-Ecosystem all on it's own - even though macro-Ecosystems don't exist in Biology.
Of course, I see deer there all the time, but what most interests me is how plant growth is reemerging on the abandoned course. The grass isn't being cut in many places - but they are bailing hay from a few large sections of the course. Regardless, many areas of the course aren't being cut, and both small plants and trees are emerging.
It's what happens to any abandoned field, like a farm that is abandoned. The plant growth retakes the area over time. On the abandoned golf course, the first Species to reintroduce are the plants and flowers. I was amazed at how tall some of the Dandelions were growing - an effort on "their" part to be high enough as to allow their seeds to get blown past or over "their" neighboring plants.
Small trees are reintroducing "themselves" on the course as well. Some of the Saplings, if you can still call them that, are already around ten feet tall and the golf course has only been abandoned a few years.
