I'm currently visiting my sister in Columbia, SC, and I've observed another rare Halo Moon.
A Halo Moon has a widespread Halo Light circle around it, somewhat like an Angel has a Halo above her head.
I observe the moon nearly nightly. I told my sister the rare event I observed tonight & she told her 10 year old son and husband, my brother in law, what was in the night Sky - they all went outside and seen it and were excited to see it. My brother in law asked me what it was called and my nephew started taking photos of it with his iPad.
Again, not only did they ask me what it was called, they also asked me what caused it. The two answers are it's a Halo Moon, and it has other names too, and it is caused by Ice Crystals in the Atmosphere.
From Wikipedia:
" ... it is also known as a moon ring, storm ring, or winter halo. It forms as sunlight or moonlight is refracted by millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Its radius is roughly the length of an outstretched hand at arm's length."

I've seen one before. They are quite pretty & a sight to behold. This was many years ago. I even got my husband to see it as well.
